Major Joshua L. Haneline currently serves as an Intermediate Level Education Fellow at the Institute of Future Conflict, United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, Colorado. Prior to this role, he served as the Deputy Division Chief, Electromagnetic Warfare Division, Space Security and Defense Program where he oversaw a 26 member team to leverage analysis, modeling, and wargaming to inform senior leadership decisions and develop comprehensive force design strategies for a $6 billion Department of the Air Force electronic warfare portfolio that align with the Secretary of the Air Force as well as Headquarters Air and Space Force.
Previously, Maj Haneline served as Chief, Executive Actions, Commander’s Action Group, Space Operations Command, directly supporting the 3-Star Commander in developing strategic intent, vision, and direction. Maj Haneline facilitated and prepared the Commander for all senior level engagements with Congress, Combatant Commands, Field Commands, HHQ, as well as international engagements while simultaneously planning and executing SpOC and Senior Level Conferences, strengthening critical Joint, interagency, international, industry, and civil mission partner relations across the command.
Prior to this role, Maj Haneline served as the Executive Officer to the 2-Star Commander, Combined Joint Task Force – Space Operations (CJTF-SO). Maj Haneline liaised between the 2-Star Commander, Deputy Commander, Chief of Staff, and Joint Directors for all operational-level mission support. As the lead interface with the 71 CJTF-SO member team, USSPACECOM, SpOC, and CJTF-SO’s components, he prioritized, consolidated, and facilitated key decisions and communication across 450 joint personnel.
Prior to serving on the Command Staffs, Maj Haneline was responsible for organizing, training, and equipping combat-ready Space Electromagnetic Warfare professionals on the 5th Electromagnetic Warfare Squadron’s (EWS) Red Cloud system in support of the Commander, USSPACECOM. He was responsible for the procurement and development of the unit’s $1.3B weapon system in order to integrate, synchronize, and execute fires for U.S., Allied, and Coalition forces. Previously, Maj Haneline served as the Mission Assurance and Future Operations Flight Commander within the same unit. He oversaw $35M in next-generation SEW system development and a $500k squadron improvement project which supported 41 personnel across three mission sets, who executed and sustained squadron operations throughout a 200% manning growth in FY2021.
Prior to his assignment at Peterson SFB, Maj Haneline was the Deputy Flight Commander of the Mission Assurance Flight, 7th Space Warning Squadron, Beale AFB, California. He had oversight of 45 contractors across six work centers, was responsible for maintenance of the $780M Upgraded Phased Array Warning Radar (UEWR), which provided Missile Waring, Missile Defense, and Space Domain Awareness for the entire Western United States. Additionally, Maj Haneline managed a $300M system hardware and software upgrade which laid the foundation for four additional global radar sites.
Maj Haneline earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University. Upon Graduation, he commissioned through Officer Training School at Maxwell AFB, in 2015. Maj Haneline continued his education and in 2018, received a Masters Degree in Engineering Management from Central Michigan University. In 2021, Maj Haneline completed Squadron Officer School in residence.
